Students graduating from high school in 2022 who self-identify with an underrepresented racial or ethnic minority group (Black or African American, Native American or Alaska Native, Hispanic or Latinx, or Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander)

July 5th – 22nd, 2022

This is a hybrid program. The first two weeks will be virtual; the third week will be in-person in New York City.

Deadline to apply:

Tuesday, May 10th, 11:59pm EDT

This July, Jane Street will be hosting our second annual Unboxed program, a three-week session, with two weeks virtual and a week in New York City, that will provide an introduction to some of the foundational concepts Jane Street employees learn in university coursework and apply in their careers. Unboxed is open to students who are about to enter their first year of university, plan to study a STEM discipline, and self-identify with an underrepresented racial or ethnic minority group.

The format of the program will be small group classes and self-guided materials covering statistics, probability, programming, and analytical problem solving. After spending a few days in each of these areas, students will be matched based on preference and availability with one of these tracks to take a deeper dive with our traders, researchers, software engineers, and business development analysts to discover how we apply these concepts to our work. This may mean translating the foundations of mathematics to the financial markets, coding in OCaml, or analyzing case studies. We know students are busy during the summer, so this program will offer some flexibility regarding attendance over the course of the three weeks to allow participants to honor their other commitments.

In exchange for participation in this program Jane Street will provide a scholarship, Chromebook, and other perks.

Unboxed does not require a prior knowledge of finance or an in-depth understanding of any other subject mentioned above, only an interest in learning more about these areas and how they might apply to a future career at Jane Street. Participants must be authorized to be employed in the U.S. without a visa sponsorship.

Participants must be fully vaccinated and produce a negative Covid test within three days of the in-person portion of the program. Masks may be required for the duration of that week. We’ll provide updated Covid protocol guidance closer to the event to those who are confirmed for a spot. While we intend to host part of the program in-person, we will continue to monitor the public health landscape. Should we decide to transition the entire program to a virtual platform, we will notify the selected students as soon as possible.

Application Process

Please submit a resume by the deadline to apply. Please see below for resume writing guidelines.

The deadline to apply is Tuesday, May 10, 11:59pm EDT. We will update you on your application status by Friday, May 28th. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email jsunboxed@janestreet.com.

Note to potential applicants: When reviewing resumes we will put emphasis on the content, not format. We want to learn about your interests, achievements, and what kept you busy through high school. However, to get a quick start, there are several online resources that provide standard resume templates that are easy to follow.

Please include your full name, contact info, high school, high school graduation year, college/university you will be attending this fall, and your declared or intended major(s). If you are undeclared, indicate this and share the various studies you are considering.

Here are examples of information you might include on a resume (all optional): awards, special recognitions, scholarships, athletics, clubs, community service, leadership roles, internships, other employment, summer academic programs, enrichment activities, academic competitions, college or career prep programs, honors and advanced coursework (e.g., APs, IBs, college-level), GPA, test scores, research, personal STEM projects, hobbies, and special interests.

Good luck with the application process and we hope to meet you soon!
