2025: A year to puzzle over

We built a puzzle for our NYC office as a tribute to 2025's pleasing mathematical property: 2025 is a perfect square, and its square root (45) is a triangular number.

This puzzle is a variation of "squaring the square." The challenge is to arrange squares of different sizes to perfectly fill a 45×45 grid (totaling 2025 squares). You need nine squares of 9x9, eight of 8x8, and so on—each quantity matching its size. This puzzle can be solved in over a million different ways!
