Trading, Research, and Machine Learning
At Jane Street, trading, research, and machine learning roles combine to form a collaborative quantitative team. These teams work together to develop the mathematical models and automated trading strategies that drive our business.
Our researchers and ML specialists develop novel models and approaches, implementing them in code to form the core of our systematic models. They analyze large datasets using a variety of machine learning techniques, exploring the latest theory and pushing beyond existing performance limits. Their work spans from optimizing hardware for high-performance computing to building robust platforms that enable others to develop and deploy new strategies efficiently. Their research tackles problems ranging from sub-microsecond trading to uncovering long-term market inefficiencies across trillions of historic events.
Traders focus on enhancing these models, analyzing their performance, and identifying new opportunities for optimization and automation. While some opportunities require rapid decision-making, the majority of our trading is fully automated. Traders leverage their quantitative skills to continually improve and scale our strategies.

Technology
Our Technology team designs and builds the systems that run our firm and the tools that our clients and employees use. We build the physical network and server infrastructure in our offices and data centers, and maintain a scalable and reliable platform for our trading floors and computing environments worldwide. There’s no specific checklist required to join this team; we’re more interested in technical depth and intellectual humility than in any particular tool or language. (Most engineers here arrived without practical experience in OCaml or finance.) We have a wide range of backgrounds across industry and academia, covering everything from machine learning and programmable hardware to systems administration, network engineering, compiler design, and a lot more. Cybersecurity
Our Cybersecurity team is a skilled group of programmers and security experts who are dedicated to keeping the firm safe. The scope of our work is wide-ranging and touches everything from software engineering and DevOps to risk analysis and security governance issues. We stay flexible and often tag in and out for each other based on our areas of expertise, so you’ll have chances for exposure to different types of work. While we’re the last line of defense, we’re certainly not the first—employee education is a top priority to make sure everyone is doing their part to protect our systems and networks. Our colleagues tend to appreciate technical detail more than most, which makes our job easier and more fun.

Data Engineering
Our Data Engineering team finds and builds datasets that power Jane Street’s research and trading. We handle a wide range of data sources—think world news, decades of weather patterns, deidentified credit card spending, or packet captures of stock exchange market data feeds—and the difference between noise and a profitable trading signal often comes down to how carefully that data is understood and structured. We’re a mix of data engineers, software engineers, and others who are curious about what data means and can get into the nitty-gritty of data quality. Some of us work on firmwide projects, while others are embedded in specific teams like Commodities or AI Assistants. Either way, we own our datasets end to end and work closely with the people who use them.

Fundamental Research
Our Equities and Commodities Fundamental teams integrate in-depth research with Jane Street’s core quantitative strategies to discover new ways to expand our trading opportunities. Our work combines big-picture strategic thinking with detailed data analysis, connecting fundamental insights to real-world trading decisions.
Our teams identify and analyze fundamental trade ideas, prepare for market catalysts, and develop financial and statistical models across a variety of asset classes and time horizons. Day-to-day work is diverse: we might analyze a potential opportunity, assess how an upcoming event could affect a sector or market, or use modeling to test and refine an investment thesis. These projects require both a broad understanding of the forces shaping markets and close attention to the details behind the data.
Collaboration is central to this research process. We work closely with colleagues across the firm to gather essential information, exchange ideas, and incorporate feedback into our analysis. By bringing fundamental perspectives into a quantitative trading environment, we help Jane Street evaluate opportunities from multiple angles and translate research into informed trading decisions.
Strategy and Product
SPs are versatile generalists who take a deeply analytical and strategic approach to solving Jane Street’s most pressing problems. They move across groups as firm priorities evolve, developing a holistic view of our business and driving cross-functional growth.
Most SP careers start with a year-long set of rotations across the entirety of Jane Street’s business - including trading, technology, finance, compliance, operations, and more. The rotations help new SPs develop a broadened skill-set, strong cross-group connections, and a detailed understanding of how all the pieces of our business fit together.
This central foundation prepares an SP to take ownership over strategic efforts, both within their team and in cross-functional initiatives. The rotation year ends with a ‘permanent’ group placement, but SPs often move across teams throughout their careers as markets evolve and firm priorities shift. Ultimately, successful SPs take an increasingly central role in shaping our business.

Finance and Operations is a constellation of many teams — including accounting, reconciliation, settlements, regulatory, margin, risk, tax, and treasury — each key to the firm’s success. We collaborate closely with each other to continuously improve the firm’s critical functions. While our department is vast, what we all share is our attention to detail, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and desire to work together to find the best solutions for the problem at hand.
