GET TO KNOW US | JANE STREET

Hello. My name is Michael. I’m the Global Food Lead in the New York office and I joined Jane Street in 2019.

WHAT IS YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LIKE?

We cover a lot of different elements to food service. My day typically starts off on the earlier side, making sure that Streeters are well fed for breakfast, our juice bar is well stocked, and the pantries look great. In other parts of my day, I collaborate with teams across different parts of the firm on our design and build projects, expansion, and growth of the firm. One of the most exciting things at Jane Street is that one day doesn’t represent anything like the other and keeps you very much on your toes.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE AT JANE STREET?

One of the coolest things about my job is to interact with all the global teams for food service across all our regional offices and feel that I’m a part of what the growth of the company represents, not only here in New York, but in our London or Amsterdam office, Singapore, or Hong Kong. It’s an absolutely amazing journey each day.

WHAT’S ONE THING YOU LOVE ABOUT THE CULTURE AT THE FIRM?

One of the things I love about the Jane Street culture is the openness that you feel physically when you walk into the office. Food Service collaborates with a number of different departments on a daily basis. The open-plan nature of the office really encourages collaboration across teams.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE JOINING YOUR TEAM?

One of the pieces of advice I would give somebody who might want to join the Food Service team is to be completely open-minded, expect the unexpected daily, and just to have fun. You don’t necessarily have to have a food service background, we can teach you all that when you get here. Some of the skills that the Food Service team finds valuable is to be a really good listener, to be collaborative in nature, and just to really love food.
