GET TO KNOW US | JANE STREET
Hi, my name is Jorge, or George. I work in the Hospitality group under Office Administration. I’ve been at Jane Street since May of 2015 and work out of the New York office.
WHAT DOES THE HOSPITALITY TEAM DO AT JANE STREET?
The Hospitality team here at Jane Street does an array of different things, including reception, travel, the Facilities Operations team, which is the team that I work on, and food. Of course, we have a lot of food here. Our main responsibility is to make sure that the office is comfortable for everyone, but we also take pride in making sure that we are proactive and plan things weeks, months, or even years ahead. Our food team prepares months in advance for the menu for the following month, and we also prepare our office when new hires start or when visitors from other offices come in, making sure that their desk is comfortable and they have a nice working space.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LOOK LIKE?
No one day looks the same here in the office. I really love, and I’m not even kidding, I really love coming in every day and not knowing what to expect for the day. I thrive on getting things done in the moment as they happen with very little notice.
WHAT SKILLS ARE IMPORTANT FOR SOMEONE TO HAVE ON THIS TEAM?
Some of the great skills that someone can have to be part of this team are communication, being a great team player, asking questions – I think those are super important. But the most important piece of working on our team is having a great attitude. Being happy to be at work every day because it is a really fun place to be in.
WHAT BACKGROUNDS DO PEOPLE ON THE HOSPITALITY TEAM COME FROM?
We love welcoming people from all different sorts of educational and professional backgrounds. Some come from a hospitality background, some don’t have a hospitality background, but they have a performing arts background, or even retail. And some people this is their first job out of school.
HOW CLOSELY DO YOU COLLABORATE WITH OTHER GROUPS?
We work very closely with a lot of the groups here at Jane Street, particularly groups that are service oriented like HR or the Tech team or even our Physical Security team. We work very closely with them every day.
WHAT MAKES WORKING AT JANE STREET UNIQUE?
We’re not limited on what we can do every day. The idea that it’s not like a cookie cutter sort of experience here. You’re not told what to do. You are welcomed here to have conversations about ideas that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve been here for a while and this is the reason why. It’s beautiful to go into a meeting, bring something to the table and see it grow and see it flourish into something that people are using every day now.
