Trading and Research
At Jane Street, trading and research roles combine to form a collaborative quantitative team. Traders and researchers work together to develop the mathematical models and automated trading strategies that drive our business. We’ve been at the forefront of applying machine learning techniques to quantitative finance, tackling research problems ranging from sub-microsecond trading to uncovering long-term market inefficiencies across trillions of historic events.
Researchers develop novel models and approaches, implementing them in code, to form the core of our systematic models. Traders focus on enhancing these models, analyzing their performance, and identifying new opportunities for optimization and automation. While some opportunities require rapid decision-making, the majority of our trading is fully automated, with traders leveraging their quantitative skills to continually improve and scale our strategies.

Technology
Our Technology team designs and builds the systems that run our firm and the tools that our clients and employees use. We build the physical network and server infrastructure in our offices and data centers, and maintain a scalable and reliable platform for our trading floors and computing environments worldwide. There’s no specific checklist required to join this team; we’re more interested in technical depth and intellectual humility than in any particular tool or language. (Most engineers here arrived without practical experience in OCaml or finance.) We have a wide range of backgrounds across industry and academia, covering everything from machine learning and programmable hardware to systems administration, network engineering, compiler design, and a lot more. Cybersecurity
Our Cybersecurity team is a skilled group of programmers and security experts who are dedicated to keeping the firm safe. The scope of our work is wide-ranging and touches everything from software engineering and DevOps to risk analysis and security governance issues. We stay flexible and often tag in and out for each other based on our areas of expertise, so you’ll have chances for exposure to different types of work. While we’re the last line of defense, we’re certainly not the first—employee education is a top priority to make sure everyone is doing their part to protect our systems and networks. Our colleagues tend to appreciate technical detail more than most, which makes our job easier and more fun.

We work with top institutional investors and asset managers, and we want the best client partners to help them. Specific skill sets for each Institutional Sales & Trading position will vary, but they all include strong capital markets knowledge, effective communication skills, and a desire to build and nurture client relationships.

Strategy and Product
The Strategy and Product (SP) department is composed of organized and collaborative individuals who sit at the heart of key initiatives and project streams across the firm. We look to understand, improve, and implement processes that make our work more efficient, manage projects across large timescales, and perform complex day-to-day workflows that require a strong understanding of the firm’s business.
In their first year of employment, SP hires rotate through three to five teams across the firm — including finance, operations, trading desks, technology groups, and more — before joining a team that matches their interests and the firm’s needs.

Finance and Operations is a constellation of many teams — including accounting, reconciliation, settlements, regulatory, margin, risk, tax, and treasury — each key to the firm’s success. We collaborate closely with each other to continuously improve the firm’s critical functions. While our department is vast, what we all share is our attention to detail, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and desire to work together to find the best solutions for the problem at hand.

Together, we enhance our colleagues’ workday experience and office environment; we design, build, and operate beautiful, functional workspaces; and we mitigate physical risks in our offices, disaster recovery sites, colocation centers, and data centers around the world. This department encompasses the office administration, engineering, and physical security teams.
