GET TO KNOW US | JANE STREET

Hi, I’m Jack. I am part of the Hospitality & Office Administration team here in London at Jane Street, and I joined in 2022.

WHAT DOES THE HOSPITALITY TEAM DO AT JANE STREET?

The Hospitality/Office Admin team at Jane Street covers quite a variety of things. Our main kind of areas I’d say would be front of house, welcoming people into the building and keeping up with the running of that. We have our global offices and so we make sure that we ensure a nice smooth travel process for all of the Streeters. And then also food service. We provide breakfast and lunch and lots of snacks. And then we just fill in all of the other little gaps around the office.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LOOK LIKE?

While some people specialize in specific areas, I have stayed pretty general, which means that every day is really different. It really depends on what season it is, whether we’ve got interns over. I have set tasks to do with travel. I might be covering the reception desk. I have meetings to do with sustainability around the office. It’s really kind of juggling all of those variety of tasks and meeting with different people and trying to balance that all together.

WHAT SKILLS ARE VALUABLE TO THE HOSPITALITY TEAM AT JANE STREET?

So the most important skills for someone to have on our team is problem solving and being really personable and open to making connections around the office. I think everything that we do relates to helping that kind of human experience inside the office. So as long as you’re open, adaptable, and interested in finding the best way to do things and make improvements, you’ll do really well here.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CULTURE AT JANE STREET?

The culture at Jane Street is really unique. It’s a very open and empowering environment. People are really encouraged to be themselves, dress as themselves and kind of bring a lot of their personality to their roles. It’s kind of achieved in a way that we have a lot of very direct, efficient language. Having that directness leaves room for open conversations and chats, so the whole culture just makes you feel at ease to contribute and feel empowered to, even from your first day, contribute your ideas and really feel like they are heard.

HOW DOES JANE STREET EMBRACE GROWTH AND NEW IDEAS?

Because there’s always so many new joiners and new people joining the company with different things to contribute, the environment seems to kind of mold and change to those different groups of people. Those new minds and people really mean the space and the office have to adapt to that. Every day we’re kind of assessing where we’re at and what’s working. It’s really changed a lot and it’s quite exciting to see.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AT JANE STREET?

We often have team dinners and it’s just really nice connecting with your team in a kind of social way. We’ve got ping pong tables, we’ve got an arcade machine, we have foosball tables, we have chess boards, poker sets. We have kind of regular summer parties, winter parties, and then we have different kinds of community groups. So you can always get involved and there’s always a different community that you can chat to.

WHAT MAKES WORKING AT JANE STREET UNIQUE?

I think it’s hard to really answer what specifically makes it feel unique because it just feels correct. The culture and the way that we communicate here and the fact that everyone is relaxed but also working really hard and getting things done and really achieving goals and feeling really empowered. Jane Street just has a culture and a way of making sure that people are happy and therefore able to do their best work. If I’m talking to my friends and I say that I’m working at a finance firm or a tech firm, I think it’s quite difficult to imagine the creative, bright, colorful environment and diverse environment that we have here.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE?

The fact that it feels really valued and important around the office. It feels like everything that we’re doing is really contributing to everyone’s day-to-day life and it’s really nice making those connections with everyone.
